For younger kids, shorter day trips along the South Coast are the way to go. The beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are within a 45-minute drive from Hotel Rangá, and the black sand beaches and basalt cliffs of Vík are only 80 minutes by car. Our location is also perfectly situated to explore the Golden Circle, a route filled with beautiful waterfalls, geysers and other natural phenomena.

While easily accessible for families, these sites are not stroller-friendly—we recommend that you bring a child carrier on your visit. Along the way, make a stop to look at Icelandic horses and sheep that graze in the surrounding countryside—just be sure to park on a designated turnout and not directly on the shoulder of the road.

Iceland with Kids: School-aged Children

Iceland is the land of fire and ice, so it is only natural that volcanoes feature in your Icelandic adventure. Visit the Lava Center—only 5 minutes by car from Hotel Rangá—for an interactive, high-tech learning experience about Iceland´s volcanic activity. The fun, hands-on exhibits—including an earthquake simulator—are perfect for school-aged children. After learning about lava, take a horseback ride in the beautiful Icelandic countryside.

We can book amazing day trips for horseback riding, ATV adventures and more and around Iceland’s South Coast.

Children 10 and older can join riding tours, and younger children are also able to take a short ride in the stables while the horse is led by a guide. And if horses aren’t your thing, why not explore a glacier or head into the highlands? Small group Super Jeep tours are adventurous but not too strenuous and open to school-aged children with the minimum age starting at 5 years.

Landmannalaugar Hot Springs
In addition to all the swimming pools there are are countless geothermal hot springs in Iceland.

With water slides and shallow, paddling pools, Icelandic swimming pools are designed with kids in mind. But there are also many natural geothermal hot springs in our area.

Guests at Hotel Rangá can use our very own hot tubs that face the beautiful Rangá River or visit the swimming pools in the towns of Hella or Hvolsvöllur, only 5 minutes by car.
