Iceland with Kids: Babies, Toddlers & Preschoolers
For younger kids, shorter day trips along the South Coast are the way to go. The beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are within a 45-minute drive from Hotel Rangá, and the black sand beaches and basalt cliffs of Vík are only 80 minutes by car. Our location is also perfectly situated to explore the Golden Circle, a route filled with beautiful waterfalls, geysers and other natural phenomena.
While easily accessible for families, these sites are not stroller-friendly—we recommend that you bring a child carrier on your visit. Along the way, make a stop to look at Icelandic horses and sheep that graze in the surrounding countryside—just be sure to park on a designated turnout and not directly on the shoulder of the road.
Iceland with Kids: School-aged Children
Iceland is the land of fire and ice, so it is only natural that volcanoes feature in your Icelandic adventure. Visit the Lava Center—only 5 minutes by car from Hotel Rangá—for an interactive, high-tech learning experience about Iceland´s volcanic activity. The fun, hands-on exhibits—including an earthquake simulator—are perfect for school-aged children. After learning about lava, take a horseback ride in the beautiful Icelandic countryside.
Children 10 and older can join riding tours, and younger children are also able to take a short ride in the stables while the horse is led by a guide. And if horses aren’t your thing, why not explore a glacier or head into the highlands? Small group Super Jeep tours are adventurous but not too strenuous and open to school-aged children with the minimum age starting at 5 years.

Iceland with Kids: Teenagers
Traveling to Iceland with teens who want to explore more independently? Teenagers with a valid driver´s license can drive a buggy on black sand beaches, an ATV in the Icelandic highlands or even operate a snowmobile on a glacier. Your younger ones can also tag along—school-aged children are able to enjoy these interactive trips as passengers at age 8 and older. Teens can take part in other adventurous activities like ice climbing on a glacier or kayaking in a glacier lagoon. Hotel Rangá also has activities to keep your teens occupied in the evenings including a game room with a billiard table and outdoor hot tubs facing the river.

Iceland with Kids: All Ages
With water slides and shallow, paddling pools, Icelandic swimming pools are designed with kids in mind. Because all Icelandic pools are heated thanks to geothermal energy, you can visit in any weather or season. In fact, many Icelanders swim laps or lounge in hot tubs when there is snow on the ground. But there are also many natural geothermal hot springs in our area.
Guests at Hotel Rangá can use our very own hot tubs that face the beautiful Rangá River or visit the swimming pools in the towns of Hella or Hvolsvöllur, only 5 minutes by car.
