Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls for good reason. The massive waterfall cascades over 32 m (105 ft) in the midst of the Hvítá glacial river. The sheer breadth and height of the waterfall—it spans the entire river—is completely breathtaking. In Icelandic, the name Gullfoss means ‘Golden Falls, and this watefall is one of the top three sights on Iceland’s Golden Circle. On sunny days, it is not uncommon to see a majestic rainbow cutting through the mist from the falls. Visitors are able to see the waterfall from two different viewing points—one higher and one lower. There is also an adjacent visitor’s center where guests can grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee.
