Northern Lights & Stargazing

New observatory at Hotel Rangá – Opened May 2014

Stargazing just became more accessible in Iceland with the recent opening of a brand new observatory at the fabulous ranch-style, Hotel Ranga. Situated in the south west of Iceland with sweeping views of the surrounding Icelandic countryside, the skies have excellent clarity here with virtually no light pollution. The observatory itself has a retractable roof offering a 360 degree view of the night sky with no trees or large buildings in the way.

Stargazing at Hotel Rangá

Every clear night, we look to the stars from our observatory at Hotel Rangá. With virtually no light pollution, this is one of the best places in Iceland to see the heaven in all its glory — the stars, the Moon, the planets and of course, the northern lights.

Stargazing Season

Stargazing, sun-gazing, and the never-ending search for the elusive Aurora Borealis have become a global phenomenon. There are even specialty travel agents who design packages and expeditions purely for travellers who want to catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights.
