Iceland’s First Electric Flight

Iceland’s first electric flight took place on August 23, 2022 with some notable passengers. In fact, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the Prime Minister, each caught a ride as Iceland’s first electric aircraft took to the skies.

Hotelier Friðrik Pálsson Led the Initiative to Import the Plane

Pilot Matthias Sveinbjörnsson flew the aircraft, taking off from Reykjavík Airport. You might remember our previous blog – Hotel Rangá owner Friðrik Pálsson and pilot Matthias Sveinbjörnsson actually led the initiative to bring this first electric aircraft to Iceland.

Electric Aircraft is the Way of the Future

Iceland’s first official electric flight was attended by an audience that included Icelandair CEO Bogi Nils Bogason. Pilot Matthías Sveinbjörnsson first took Iceland’s President for a ride followed by the Icelandic Prime Minister. What’s more, President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson gave a speech celebrating Iceland’s first electric aircraft. There surely appears to be a place for electric aircraft in the future of Icelandic aviation.
