Watching this these majestic lights is always a treat for Icelanders and one of the true privileges of country living. For most of our guests, however, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, and seeing their faces during a fierce display is almost as wonderful as seeing the aurora itself.

The northern lights are visible when conditions are right. To see these beautiful dancing lights we need clear skies, solar activity and pure darkness. We are unable to predict when the northern lights will appear, but these conditions make it more likely.

A local guide, Kristján Pétur Vilhelmsson, captured this gorgeous image of the lights dancing in the sky and reflected in the pond outside our Royal Suite. You can find more of his picture on Instagram: @kristjanpv.
