Mount Hekla is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. Visible from Hotel Rangá’s front door, Hekla is an active volcano which last erupted in 2000. At 1491 m (4892 ft), Mount Hekla towers above the surrounding landscape. Hekla’s history is filled with serious eruptions that caused much harm, not only in Iceland but across Europe. That’s right – the volcanic ash resulting from some of Hekla’s eruptions was so great in scope that it affected European weather and agriculture. Nowadays, Hekla is considered a safe place to visit, though it is recommended that you check the meteorological office’s website before your trip. Mount Hekla is active and overdue for an eruption – so while it is highly unlikely that it will erupt during your stay, it is good to be aware. It is also a great idea to book a guided tour of the area by contacting the Hotel Rangá reception.
