Day trip to the Westman Islands
The Westman Islands are south Iceland’s best kept secret. The main island, Heimaey, is actually home to about 5000 people. It’s a small but bustling village with several restaurants, a community pool and even its own brewery. Visitors to the islands can explore beautiful hiking trails, go for adventurous rib safari tours or indulge in gourmet dining.
Hotel Rangá is located just 30 minutes from the harbor at Landeyjahöfn. From there, it’s only 45 minutes by ferry to Heimaey. Visitors are even able to bring their cars if you so desire. South Iceland Waterfalls
Iceland is filled with waterfalls–more than 10,000 in fact! Luckily, Iceland’s south coast is home to some of the most jaw-dropping cascades. Just twenty-five minutes from Hotel Rangá is Seljalandsfoss, a powerful waterfall where visitors can actually walk a path behind the falls. Just twenty minutes further, you’ll find Skógafoss–a huge waterfall with a viewing platform located directly above the pounding water. Both of these waterfalls are easy to access and right off the ring road.
Gullfoss is perhaps Iceland’s best known waterfall. This huge cascade pours over 32 m (105 ft) in the middle of the Hvíta glacial river. The sheer power of the falls is immense and often paired with a huge rainbow. You’ll find Gullfoss on Iceland’s famous Golden Circle which also includes the famous Strokkur geyser and Þingvellir National Park.
