The story of the Sólheimasandur DC3 plane wreck

While you may not have heard of Sólheimasandur before you have almost definitely seen it.
It’s a black sand beach stretching along the Southern Coast and home to an abandoned DC-3/117 plane that features heavily in commercials and music videos shot in Iceland, most notably Justin Bieber’s „I’ll show you.” It even made an appearance in a recent Bollywood film.

A true highlight for Trystan and Biff

Hotel Rangá had the pleasure of hosting power parents Biff Chaplow and Trystan Reese this past November. The couple was all over the headlines in 2017 when Trystan, a transgender man, became pregnant with their youngest Leo, but they also have two adopted children – Hailey and Riley. Like any couple, Trystan and Biff sometimes need a break from their responsibilities to reconnect and they decided to do it in Iceland. They stayed for a week and spent their first two nights at Hotel Rangá, before renting a van and driving around the country.

We asked Trystan a few questions about their stay and he graciously answered.

Hanging out with Icelandic horses

For Katrín Sigurðardóttir of Icelandic Horseworld, horses are a way of life. Actually, they are a way of life for her whole family. “It is really the only thing my parents ever did, work around horses and raise horses. We’ve talked about horses everyday my whole life,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve often wondered if I even have any friends who aren’t into horses – I don’t think so.”

Traveling with kids in Iceland

Five Take Flight share their Rangá experience

The Tillotson family doesn’t settle for your average family holiday. In 2017, parents Derek and Kenzie sold their Utah home to bring big brother Porter, funny man Beckett, and little sister Wren on the adventure of a lifetime, traveling to 38 countries in 54 weeks. And what was their first international stop? Well Iceland of course!

Pompeii of the North: The Westman Islands

The Westman Islands, or Vestmannaeyjar in Icelandic, is an archipelago of 15 islands located just off the south coast of Iceland. Out of the 15, only one is inhabited year round: the island of Heimaey. There you will find a community of 4.000 that has prospered from a thriving fishing industry. With stunning landscapes, charming villages and the largest puffin colony of the world, these small yet enchanting islands offer a variety of activities and attractions for visitors.
