Slow Travel at Hotel Rangá

Book a stay at Hotel Rangá and embrace slow travel. Take the time to truly connect with your surroundings - whether you are walking on a black sand beach or watching auroras dance across the night sky.

In today’s fast-paced world, travel can sometimes feel more like a race than a true escape. Packed itineraries and must-see attractions turn into just another checklist, while our smartphones—meant to help us navigate—often pull us away from the moment. At Hotel Rangá, we believe travel should be different. We’re passionate about offering authentic, immersive experiences that invite guests to slow down and truly connect. This reflects a growing movement in the travel industry: slow travel. It’s all about quality over quantity—choosing meaningful interactions with people, cultures and landscapes over rushed schedules. It’s travel the way it should be.

What is Slow Travel, Anyway?

Slow travel is exactly what it sounds like—travel that prioritizes a slower pace. But it’s not just about speed; slow travel encourages us to savor every moment. Here are some ideas about how to embrace slow travel on a trip to south Iceland.

  • Don’t pack too much into one day. Endless travel days spent zooming from one location are no fun for anyone. Instead, slow down and try to truly savor the experience of traveling in south Iceland.

  • Prioritize adventures based on your interests. Love to be active? Try a guided hiking tour of the epic Fimmvörðuháls trail. Are you an animal lover? Go on a horseback riding tour and see Iceland from a new perspective.

  • Focus on your five senses. Step back and be present. Get off your smartphone for a moment and look at the snow-capped glaciers on the horizon line. Smell the fresh breeze blowing from the Atlantic Ocean. Listen to the sound of birdsong or the whistling wind. Grab a handful of black sand and feel the tiny grains falling through your fingers. Savor a cappuccino made just for you at Hotel Rangá.

How are Stargazing and the Northern Lights Related to Slow Travel?

Hotel Rangá is known as one of the top stargazing and northern lights hotels in all of Iceland. But did you know that an evening spent in the presence of the night sky is closely connected to slow travel?

  • Slow down and embrace the unpredictable. In order to see the northern lights we need clear skies, solar activity and darkness. However, the aurora is unpredictable – even when conditions are right, it might not appear. In order to witness the aurora, you have to slow down and be patient.

  • Be present so you don’t miss the magic. If you are lucky enough to see the northern lights, try to be present. Look into the night sky and focus on your five senses. Watch the green and purple lights dance in the darkness. Listen to the night sounds. Feel the cold night air against your face. Don’t spend too much time taking photos – instead try to fully immerse yourself in the magical aurora.
  • Stargaze and connect with nature in a new way. In many cities around the world, stargazing is impossible. Bright city lights make it difficult to see the stars. In fact, stargazing is the perfect embodiment of slow travel. Stargazing invites travelers to slow down and immerse themselves in the vast mystery of the night sky. Hotel Rangá is located in the Icelandic countryside, far from any light pollution. As a result, we can see incredible views of far off planets and constellations. We even have our very own Rangá Observatory that houses two high-powered telescopes.
