Slow Mornings In South Iceland

Mornings during northern lights season at Hotel Rangá are calm and unhurried. The sun spreads gradually across the Rangá River and the surrounding countryside, revealing wide fields, distant mountains, and a view of the horizon that always seems larger than expected. After a restful night in your room or suite, the best way to begin the day is with one of the hotel’s most beloved traditions: the breakfast buffet.

A Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

Breakfast at Hotel Rangá is not the kind of quick meal you rush through before heading out the door. It is something to savor. Guests often linger over coffee while looking out across the peaceful countryside, planning the adventures ahead. And yes, there is champagne available, for those who believe a day of exploring Iceland deserves a celebratory start.

The buffet itself is filled with plenty of options. Our chefs make omelets and eggs to order, and warm breakfast dishes are served alongside fresh breads, pastries, and cheeses. Bowls of Icelandic skyr with fresh berries are a popular way to start the day. What’s more, the smell of freshly made waffles fills the dining room—that’s right, you can make your very own, and it’s incredibly popular with both kids and adults. Don’t forget to grab a strong coffee or a glass of fresh juice to finish off your morning meal. At Hotel Rangá, breakfast is the perfect way to ease into the day before heading out into the Icelandic landscape.

Want to linger a little longer in bed? For a truly decadent morning, breakfast can be delivered directly to your door. Simply call the Hotel Rangá reception team and you will soon be enjoying breakfast in bed.

After breakfast, it is time to decide where the day’s adventure will lead. One of the great advantages of staying at Hotel Rangá is its location in the heart of South Iceland, close to many of the country’s most famous natural wonders. The reception team is always happy to help guests plan their excursions, whether that means booking a guided tour, arranging a private driver, or suggesting a scenic self-drive route. There are several fantastic options within reach of the hotel, each offering a different perspective on Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes.

The Classics: Iceland’s Golden Circle

For many visitors, the Golden Circle is the classic introduction to Iceland’s natural beauty. A private or self-guided journey along this famous route includes several of the country’s most iconic sights. At Gullfoss, a powerful glacier-fed waterfall plunges into a dramatic canyon, sending mist high into the air. Nearby, the geothermal fields of Geysir remind visitors that Iceland sits atop a very active geothermal landscape. Steam rises from the earth, and the geyser Strokkur erupts every few minutes, launching boiling water high into the sky.

Þingvellir National Park is another highlight of the route. Here, guests can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are slowly drifting apart. The area is not only geologically fascinating but also historically important, as it was the site of Iceland’s ancient parliament.

Chasing Waterfalls Along The South Coast

Another wonderful day trip is a drive along Iceland’s spectacular south coast. This region is famous for its dramatic scenery, where waterfalls tumble from high cliffs and black sand beaches stretch along the Atlantic Ocean.

Two of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls lie along this route. Seljalandsfoss offers the unique experience of walking behind the waterfall itself, while Skógafoss impresses visitors with its immense power and height. Further east, Reynisfjara black sand beach showcases towering basalt columns and crashing waves that feel both beautiful and awe-inspiring. Although parts of the coastline are currently experiencing erosion, visitors can still safely admire the striking views from a respectful distance.

Into The Wild: A Super Jeep Highland Adventure

For travelers who want to experience something truly adventurous, a super jeep tour into the highlands offers an unforgettable journey. Landmannalaugar, one of the most extraordinary regions in Iceland, lies deep within the island’s rugged interior. Reaching it requires specially modified vehicles capable of crossing rivers and navigating rough mountain terrain.

However, the effort is well worth it. The highlands reveal colorful rhyolite mountains in shades of red, yellow, and green, along with steaming geothermal vents, natural hot springs, and vast lava fields. The scenery feels wild and untouched, a reminder of how powerful Iceland’s geological forces remain.

The hotel’s outdoor hot tubs are one of the most enjoyable ways to unwind after a day of adventure. Sitting in warm geothermal water while breathing in the cool Icelandic air is both relaxing and invigorating. The peaceful setting offers excellent views of the beautiful Rangá River, and on clear days you can even see the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier-volcano on the horizon. To make it a truly luxurious experience, we suggest that our guests bring with them a delightful drink from our well-stocked Rangá Bar. There is nothing like lounging in hot water with a drink in hand after a day filled with epic adventures.

An Evening To Savor At The Rangá Restaurant

Dinner at the Rangá Restaurant is one of the highlights of staying at the hotel. The dining room is elegant with floor to ceiling windows that showcase the beauty of the natural landscape surrounding Hotel Rangá. What’s more, the menu celebrates local Icelandic ingredients with a modern twist.  Depending on the season, guests might begin with a fresh seafood starter or beetroot carpaccio. Our famous wild mushroom soup is always on the menu. Main courses often feature Icelandic specialties such as tender lamb, Arctic char, or beautifully prepared beef. Vegan dishes are always included on our A La Carte Menu so that every guest enjoys a memorable dining experience.

A Window To The Universe

Once night falls, another unique experience awaits. On clear evenings, guests can visit our Rangá Observatory for a guided stargazing session with a local astronomer. Because Hotel Rangá sits far from city lights, the night sky here is exceptionally dark and filled with stars.

Through the observatory’s telescopes, guests can observe distant planets, star clusters, and galaxies that are normally invisible to the naked eye. The astronomer guiding the session shares stories about the constellations and explains some of the fascinating science behind the universe above us.

The Wake-Up Call Everyone Wants

One of the most appreciated services at Hotel Rangá is the northern lights wake-up call. Guests who request it can rest comfortably knowing they will be alerted if the aurora appears during the night. Our Hotel Rangá reception team carefully monitors the sky and notifies guests as soon as the lights begin to dance.

When The Northern Lights Take The Stage

When the moment finally comes, it often begins with a faint green glow on the horizon. Within minutes the glow grows brighter, stretching across the sky in shimmering waves of color. Guests step outside into the cool night air as the northern lights move gracefully above the countryside.

In the distance, the silhouette of Eyjafjallajökull rises against the sky, creating a dramatic backdrop for the display. The lights twist, ripple, and shimmer, sometimes glowing softly and other times bursting into brilliant curtains of green, pink, or purple. It is one of those moments that feels almost impossible to describe, yet impossible to forget.

The Perfect Icelandic Night

Some aurora displays last only a few minutes, while others continue for hours. Eventually the lights fade, leaving behind a sky full of stars. Guests return inside warm and happy, carrying with them the memory of something truly extraordinary. And when morning arrives again, another beautiful Icelandic day begins at Hotel Rangá.
