At Hotel Rangá, we do things a little differently. There’s no traditional gym here, no rows of machines or dedicated fitness room. But we know that many of our guests like to stay active, even while traveling. Instead of building a gym, we offer something simpler. Guests who want to incorporate some extra movement into their day can now use our Gym in a Bag. This portable set of fitness equipment is an easy way to get in a good workout or do some extra stretching to close out an active day. We are already getting great feedback from guests who want to keep moving without interrupting their trip.
A Gym That Comes to You
Instead of heading to a gym, you can take your workout wherever it suits you. Exercise in your room, or even outside if the weather cooperates.
Inside our Gym in a Bag, you’ll find:
- Kettlebell
- Resistance cable
- Resistance bands
- Foam roller
- Massage balls
- Yoga mat
It’s everything you need for a quick workout, a proper strength session, or just a bit of stretching after a long day.
Built for Real Travel Days
Days in south Iceland tend to be full. Waterfalls, black sand beaches, glacier views, and long scenic drives along the south coast all add up. By the time you return to the hotel, your body usually feels it. Some guests use Gym in a Bag for a full workout. Others just take ten minutes to stretch and reset before dinner. There’s no right way to use our Gym in a Bag, which is exactly the point. However, if you want a bit of structure, here’s a simple routine you can follow using everything in the bag.

Yoga Mats and Slow Mornings
Alongside Gym in a Bag, we also offer yoga mats for guests who prefer something a little slower. There is something special about starting the day with a stretch while looking out over the Rangá River. The light changes quickly here, and even a few minutes of movement can feel grounding before heading out to explore. Or, if you are visiting in winter, a gentle evening stretch can be the perfect way to unwind while waiting for the northern lights wake-up call.
This fits closely with the way we think about slow travel at Hotel Rangá. You’re giving yourself space to experience where you are, even in small moments like this. Some mornings that means getting out early and exploring. Other mornings it’s staying in a little longer, stretching on the mat, and letting the day come to you.
Take It Outside When You Can
If the weather is on your side, one of the best ways to stay active at Hotel Rangá is simply to step outside. The hotel sits right along the Rangá River, one of the most well-known salmon rivers in Iceland. It’s a beautiful place for a walk, especially in the early morning or late evening when the light is soft and the area feels especially peaceful.
You can follow the river for a relaxed walk, or pick up the pace for a jog if you’re in the mood for something more active. The surrounding countryside is open and spacious, with plenty of quiet roads and paths to explore. One small thing to keep in mind: if you come across a fence along your route, be sure to close it behind you. It’s a simple habit here in Iceland and helps keep the land and animals exactly where they should be. Other than that, movement is as easy as stepping out the door.
Movement as Part of Longevity
There’s a reason this way of moving feels good. In Iceland, staying active isn’t usually about formal workouts. It’s built into daily life. Walking, working outside, getting fresh air, and keeping your body in motion all play a part in the secret to Icelandic longevity. Consistent, low-pressure movement plays a bigger role than intense routines done once in a while. Our Gym in a Bag fits into that idea. It gives you a way to stay active without turning it into something rigid.
Local Gyms in Hella and Hvolsvöllur
If you feel like stepping outside the hotel for your workout, there are also gym facilities available in the nearby towns of Hella and Hvolsvöllur, both just a short drive from Hotel Rangá. These local gyms are fully equipped and very well maintained, offering everything from free weights to cardio machines and functional training areas. Whether you want a quick session or a full workout, you will find everything you need.
Recovery, Rangá Style
After a workout, or even just a long day out exploring, there’s no better place to recover than the geothermal hot tubs outside the hotel. Slip into the warm water and let everything slow down for a while. Relax your muscles after using the kettlebell, resistance bands, or going for a run along the river. You can from movement to stillness, without having to go anywhere.
Some guests like to do a short workout and then head straight to the hot tubs. Others save it for later in the evening, after dinner, when the air is cooler and the sky begins to darken. And in winter, this is where it gets even better. Sitting in warm water while watching the night sky, waiting to see if the northern lights appear, is one of those experiences that doesn’t really need improving.
Move a Little, Rest a Lot
One of the nicest things about our Gym in a Bag is that it fits into your stay without taking anything away from it. You can do a full workout, go for a walk along the river, or just stretch for five minutes and call it enough. Then head to dinner, step into the hot tubs, or settle in for the evening. If you’d like to borrow a Gym in a Bag or a yoga mat during your stay, just ask at the Hotel Rangá reception. We’ll have everything ready for you.
