Should I propose in Iceland during the summer?
Icelandic summers are incredibly beautiful and offer visitors the chance to experience the natural phenomenon known as the midnight sun. During this time of year, the sun just barely sets. Instead, we experience almost 24/7 daylight. A lovely golden dusk glows during the middle of the night on sunny days, offering incredible lighting for photographs. Why not make your proposal during the longest days of the year underneath the midnight sun? You can visit some of Iceland’s most popular tourist sites with few or no visitors besides you and your partner.
Should I propose in Iceland during the winter?
A wintertime proposal can be incredibly romantic. If you are lucky, the countryside around Hotel Rangá will be covered in fluffy white snow. Propose outside beside a frozen waterfall or inside a one-of-a-kind ice cave. Bring along a thermos of our special Hotel Rangá hot chocolate or an icy cold bottle of champagne. We can even assist you to book a photographer who can capture the moment and do a special engagement photo shoot.
Afterwards, you can get cozy in the Hotel Rangá hot tubs or enjoy a warming hot toddy at the Rangá Bar. A wintertime engagement also offers couples the chance to go stargazing in the Rangá Observatory. If you are lucky, you might even catch a sighting of the northern lights.
Is it possible to propose underneath the northern lights?
Theoretically yes–if you are lucky and the timing is right, you might be able to propose underneath the northern lights. However, we cannot guarantee that aurora will appear. In fact, we recommend that you do not plan on a northern lights proposal. Rather, plan an amazing proposal beside a beautiful waterfall. Then, if the northern lights appear, it will just be a cherry on top of the entire experience!
If you want to experience the northern lights, then you will need to plan your engagement in Iceland between September and March. In order to see the northern lights we need darkness, clear skies and solar activity. Icelandic weather and solar activity can be quite unpredictable. Therefore, it’s a good idea to book a stay at Hotel Rangá for several days. Even so, we can never truly know when the northern lights will appear. This is what makes them all the more magical.
Engagement in Iceland: What is the best place to propose?
Iceland is filled with many stunning spots to pop the question. There are amazing waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Gullfoss that offer incredible options for photography. If you want to go off the beaten path and avoid the crowds, we highly recommend the waterfalls Gluggafoss and Kvernufoss. These beautiful waterfalls are slightly smaller but more private and very romantic.
Iceland’s black sand beaches are also a wonderful place for a proposal. Most visitors to Iceland want to visit Reynisfjara–a stunning black sand beach bordered by basalt columns. However, this means that Reynisfjara can be quite crowded. We know about a secluded black sand beach that offers excellent views of the Westman Islands on a clear day. Engagement in Iceland: Can you combine a proposal with an adventure tour?
Yes! It’s an excellent idea to propose on a private adventure tour. Go snowmobiling on top of the nearby glacier-volcano Eyjafjallajökull and pop the question as you gaze upon views of Iceland’s south coast. Or book a private super jeep tour and visit the beautiful nature reserve Þórsmörk. Your super jeep driver and guide can help you to find the best spot to propose. Ask the big question beside a mighty glacial river or atop a mossy mountain.
For adrenaline lovers, we recommend that you book a helicopter tour. Go on an unforgettable adventure high in the sky, and then make a special landing when you are ready to propose.
