Are there any special traditions in Iceland in April?
April is often when Icelanders see the first signs of spring. One special sign involves a bird called the golden plover, or lóa in Icelandic. During the wintertime, the golden plover travels to the British Isles and coastal areas in West Europe and North Africa. However, come late March or early April, the first golden plovers begin to arrive back in Iceland where they stay all throughout the summer.
There is a saying in Iceland that spring is officially here when someone makes the first sighting of the golden plover. Every year this sighting makes front page news – the Icelandic winter can feel quite long, after all! If you are interested in seeing the golden plover up close, try looking just outside Hotel Rangá. These birds have longer legs and a larger beak. The feathers on their chest are dark brown while their back is speckled with golden, brown and white feathers. A white band of feathers separates the bird’s chest and back.
