The Lava Tunnel

The lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir is an ancient lava tube and one of the longest caves in all of Iceland. The tube was formed when lava flowed deep underneath the earth during an eruption around 5000 years ago. Now, visitors can go underground and walk inside the tube itself on the Standard Lava Tunnel Tour. This tour is quite accessible–powerful lighting has been installed and several footbridges and paths make it easier to walk inside the rocky tunnel. All tours are led by an expert guide who will share information about the lava tube’s formation and history. Please wear warm clothes as well as a water resistant outer layer–sometimes the tunnel can be a bit damp. Sturdy shoes are also necessary.  Note: It takes approximately 60 minutes to drive from Hotel Rangá to the Lava Tunnel. Pick up can be included at an additional cost. The tour is not recommended for those that have difficulties with balance, walking on uneven surfaces or up and down steep stairs.
