Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull Glacier
The tour begins with an introduction to the equipment and safety rules, followed by a short walk across volcanic ash and sand toward Sólheimajökull Glacier. As you walk through the valley once filled by the glacier, your certified guide will explain how the glacier is rapidly retreating. At the glacier’s edge, you’ll lace up your crampons and embark on a journey to explore this ever-changing, otherworldly landscape of ice.
The glacier hike offers a unique adventure; you will witness the forces shaping the glacier, with mesmerizing ice ridges, deep crevasses, and dramatic sinkholes, called “moulins” that drain meltwater in water slides and waterfalls. The glacier also carries volcanic ash from past eruptions, including the famous Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010.
