Christmas Traditions in Iceland
At Christmas time the traditional Santa Claus doesn't get much of a look-in in Iceland. Here the 13 naughty "Yuletide Lads" visit children over subsequent days in an ancient tradition. Hotel Ranga is CLOSED DECEMBER 24 + 25 but open between 26 to 31 of December.

Most Icelanders go to Reykjavik where they gather around bonfires and later watch the impressive fireworks display in the skies that brings people in from all over the world. A night for partying. Please note that the days between the 26th to the 31st of December are often fully booked at Hotel Rangá and a friendly international atmosphere presents itself with travelers from all over the world staying at the hotel during the holiday season. Hotel Ranga is closed December 31 + January 1. Open all other dates.

All the fishermen of Iceland - and there are lots of them - take this June Sunday off for festivities at the nearest harbour. Officially known as Sjomannadagur (Seamans' Day), it's a time when all Icelandic fishing vessels are in port and the crews celebrate with their families and visitors.

On 17 June Iceland commemorates the birthday of national hero Jón Sigurdsson (1811-1879). National Independence Day starts off on a solemn and patriotic note, but by the afternoon the mood lightens up. Celebrated all around the island, the Independence Day is truly a children's festival.

The Rey Cup is an international football tournament for youth teams of boys aged under 13, 14 and 16, as well as girls under 13 and 15, held at Reykjavik's Laugardalur Sport Centre.
July - August 2010 (annual) Verslunarmannahelgi (Trademens' Day Weekend)
The first weekend in August is a bank holiday weekend, which sees festivals and events taking place all over Iceland. Thousands of Icelanders take advantage of the holiday by driving out into countryside. Many youths go the Westman Isles to party and listen to a plethora of concerts.
